Care Pack #039
The Thing You Keep Not Doing
For the task you have carried for weeks. Just do it has already failed, so this does not say it again.
Before you begin, where are you right now?
One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.
It is not a big task. That is the humiliating part. It would take twenty minutes, you have known about it for three weeks, and every day you do not do it, it gets slightly heavier and slightly harder to explain.
Here is why just do it does not work. Putting something off is not a failure of discipline, it is what happens when approaching a task produces a feeling you would rather not have. Avoiding it removes the feeling immediately, which teaches you to avoid it again tomorrow. It is a loop that works perfectly, which is exactly the trouble.
So the task is not the obstacle. The feeling the task produces is the obstacle, and that is the thing to make smaller first.
- 1.Say the task out loud and notice what arrives in your body. Dread, boredom, resentment, a flush of shame. That feeling is the actual obstacle, not the task
- 2.Name it in one word. Putting a word on it lowers it slightly, reliably, and it tells you which of the moves below will work
- 3.Shrink the task until it is almost insulting. Not the whole thing. Open the document. Find the phone number. Get the form out of the drawer
- 4.Set eight minutes and stop when it goes, even mid-sentence, especially mid-sentence. Stopping while it is still easy is what makes the next start cheap
- 5.You are not lazy. Avoiding something that feels bad is what every nervous system is built to do, and it works, which is the problem
Which kind of not-doing is this
You are afraid of doing it badly
The task itself is not hard. Being judged on it is the threat, and an unstarted thing cannot be judged. So it stays unstarted, safely, forever.
Do it deliberately badly once. Nothing happens, and that is the information.
You do not know the first physical step
This one is misfiled. It is not procrastination, it is an undefined task, and no amount of resolve will move something that has not been turned into an action yet.
Write the first move as a verb and an object. Then do only that.
It is genuinely dull
Some things are simply boring, and waiting to feel motivated about them is waiting for something that is not coming. Motivation is not the missing ingredient here.
Pair it, do it in company, or pay someone. Do not wait to want to.
You resent having to
Underneath is a sentence you have not said: this should not be mine to do. Resented tasks do not move while the resentment is unspoken, because part of not doing it is the protest.
Say the protest out loud first. Then decide.
You are protecting yourself from finding something out
The bill that shows the number. The message that confirms what you suspect. The appointment that gives it a name. While it is undone, you do not have to know.
The heaviest kind, and the one most often mistaken for laziness.
Make starting cheaper than avoiding
Eight minutes, then stop. Stop even if it is going well, and especially mid-sentence. Ending while it is still easy is what makes tomorrow cheap to start, and finishing at a hard place is what makes the next attempt expensive.
Put it at a time rather than on a list. Lists are very good at holding things indefinitely. And do the first eight minutes with somebody on the phone or in the room: nothing about the task changes and it becomes markedly easier, which tells you something about what the difficulty was made of.
You are not lazy. You are avoiding a feeling, and that is the most ordinary thing a person does.
You reached the end. Where are you now?
One tap, however it landed.
