Care Pack #024

Feeling Like a Fraud

For the certainty that you got here by luck and are about to be found out. Commonly called imposter syndrome, and almost universal.

Before you begin, where are you right now?

One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.

1, settled10, at its worst

You are in the room, and the whole time you are in it, part of you is running the calculation: how much longer before somebody notices. Every good outcome gets filed under luck, timing, or a mistake nobody has caught yet. Every piece of praise gets discounted before it lands.

It is usually called imposter syndrome, though it is not a syndrome and not a diagnosis, just an extremely common way that competence feels from the inside. The people who have it are, reliably, not the frauds. Actual frauds are famously untroubled.

You are not required to feel qualified in order to do the next thing. Feelings are not credentials, in either direction.

  1. 1.You are not required to feel qualified in order to do the next thing. Feelings are not credentials, in either direction
  2. 2.Say the fear plainly to yourself: "I think I am about to be exposed". Said flat, it loses some of its grip
  3. 3.Do the smallest piece of the task in front of you. Competence is easier to remember from inside the work than from outside it
  4. 4.Do not open the search for proof that you belong. There is no amount of it that will settle this
  5. 5.Send it, submit it, say it. Waiting until you feel ready is waiting for the wrong signal

The three moves that keep it alive

Discounting

It was easy, they were being kind, anyone could have done it, the bar was low. Every piece of evidence gets disqualified on arrival, which is why more achievement never fixes this. The filter is on the intake, not the supply.

You cannot fill a bucket that empties itself at the top.

Comparing inside to outside

You have access to every one of your own doubts and none of theirs. So you compare your private uncertainty to their public composure and conclude you are the only one improvising.

Everyone in the room is comparing their inside to your outside.

Avoiding being seen not knowing

Not asking, not volunteering, not taking the thing you are not ready for. It protects you from exposure and it also stops the evidence changing, which is how the feeling stays exactly as strong in year ten as it was in year one.

Readiness arrives during, not before.

What actually shifts it

Not reassurance, and not achievement. What tends to move it is external, plain, and boring: a record you keep of what you did and what people said about it, written down at the time, with no commentary attached so there is nothing to argue with later.

And saying the fraud thought out loud to someone who does similar work. The rate at which they say "oh, me too" is the entire treatment, and it is why this one is worth speaking rather than managing privately.

The people who worry they are frauds are the ones checking. That is the opposite of what a fraud does.

You reached the end. Where are you now?

One tap, however it landed.
