Care Pack #038
The Urge to Isolate
For the pull to disappear from everyone. It does not assume you are wrong to want to.
Before you begin, where are you right now?
One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.
The messages sit there unanswered. The plan you agreed to two weeks ago is now something you are working out how to get out of. And underneath it is a pull, quite a strong one, toward being where nobody can reach you at all.
Most advice about this starts by telling you to reach out, which assumes the pull means one thing. It does not. It has several different causes that feel identical from the inside and need opposite responses, and being told to push through when what you actually need is rest is how people learn to ignore this kind of page.
Solitude you choose is rest. Solitude that chooses you is something else. Working out which one this is comes before deciding what to do about it.
- 1.You are allowed to not see anyone today. That is a real option and it is sometimes the right one
- 2.Before you cancel anything, ask one question: am I tired of people, or tired of being perceived? They feel identical and they need opposite things
- 3.Keep one thread open, however thin. A single message saying "I am going quiet for a bit, not upset with you" costs almost nothing and keeps the door on its hinges
- 4.Do not turn the phone off entirely. Silenced is different from unreachable, and the difference matters more than it sounds
- 5.Solitude you choose is rest. Solitude that chooses you is something else. Today you do not have to work out which
Which pull is this
You are depleted
You want less input, not less love. Nothing has gone wrong between you and anybody. You have simply run out, and company is expensive when you are empty.
Rest is the right answer here. Take it, and give it an end time.
You feel unfit to be seen
The pull is not toward rest, it is away from being looked at. This is the one where withdrawing makes it worse every time, because it removes the exact contact that would have contradicted the feeling.
This one needs one person, not one more day alone.
You have gone flat
Company feels like effort with no return, so staying in is obviously correct. The catch is that flatness lifts from the outside in, and waiting to feel like seeing someone is waiting for the wrong signal.
Go briefly. You do not have to enjoy it for it to work.
You are worn out from performing
You do not actually want fewer people. You want a room where less is expected of you. Cancelling everything solves it for a week and then leaves you out of practice and further behind.
Fewer, easier rooms. Not no rooms.
You are withdrawing at someone
Something happened, and the quiet is aimed. It feels like distance and it is a message. The trouble is that silence used as a message almost never arrives as the one you sent.
Say the thing, badly if necessary. Badly still lands better than nothing.
One door, left open
Whichever of the five it is, the same small thing protects you: one contact kept. One person, one regular thing, chosen in advance and held even on the weeks you do not want to. That is the difference between resting and vanishing, and it is a much smaller ask than staying fully in the world.
Watch the second week. The first week alone is relief. By the second it usually starts costing more than it returns, and that is the point almost everybody misses, because by then the quiet has stopped feeling like a decision and started feeling like who you are.
You are allowed to go quiet. Leave one door on its hinges while you do.
You reached the end. Where are you now?
One tap, however it landed.
