Care Pack #007

Sleep Collapse Pack

Support for the nights when sleep will not come and the mind will not stop.

Before you begin, where are you right now?

One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.

1, settled10, at its worst

If you are here in the middle of the night, something in you is still on duty when it should be off. Racing thoughts, a body that will not settle, the growing dread of the morning ahead. None of this means something is wrong with you. It means your system has not received the signal that the day is over.

One bad night is survivable. Your body knows how to run on less than it wants. The panic about not sleeping usually costs more than the lost sleep itself.

Sleep is not a task to complete. It is a place your body returns to when it feels safe.

  1. 1.Let go of the goal of sleep. Aim only for rest; sleep tends to follow when it is not chased
  2. 2.Breathe in for four, hold for seven, out for eight. Four rounds
  3. 3.Unclench your jaw. Drop your shoulders. Let your hands go soft
  4. 4.When your mind races, name each thought "thinking" and let it drift past
  5. 5.Resting is already doing something for you, even on the nights sleep does not come

The 3am Protocol

Step 1: Stop Checking the Clock

Turn the clock away, or put the phone face down out of reach. Counting the hours you have left is arithmetic for the alarm system, not for rest.

Every glance restarts the math. No glances, no math.

Step 2: The Twenty Minute Rule

If you have been awake long enough that the bed feels like a fight, get up. Move to another spot with the lights low. Do something genuinely boring. Return only when your eyes are heavy.

This keeps the bed meaning rest, not struggle.

Step 3: Rest Still Counts

If sleep will not come, lie quietly with your eyes closed and let your body be heavy. Quiet rest restores more than the panicked pursuit of sleep does.

The goal shifts from sleeping to resting. Sleep often follows once it is no longer chased.

The Sleep-Panic Loop

Not sleeping raises alarm. The alarm makes sleep harder. Harder sleep raises more alarm. This loop is the actual problem on most bad nights, and it runs on one belief: that tonight's sleep must be rescued or tomorrow is ruined.

You cannot force sleep, but you can stop feeding the loop. Rest without sleep still counts. Tomorrow will be run on what you have, and it will still be run.

If the wakefulness comes with racing heart or dread, the loop has crossed into the panic family. The breathing tool below speaks that language.

Downshift Tools

Guided Breathing

Inhale 4 · Hold 2 · Exhale 6

Follow the circle, or just the words. Either is enough.

Ready

The Worry Download

If the mind is holding a list, give the list somewhere else to live. Paper by the bed, two minutes, everything written down ugly and unsorted. The mind loosens its grip on what it knows is captured.

The Body Scan Descent

Starting at the forehead and moving down slowly: unclench the jaw, drop the shoulders, soften the belly, let the legs go heavy. One region at a time. No rush and no score.

The Boring Anchor

Pick something mentally flat: listing objects in an imagined room, walking a familiar route in memory, counting backward from three hundred by threes. Boredom is the off-ramp, not the enemy.

When the Nights Keep Repeating

One rough night is weather. Weeks of them are a pattern worth bringing to a professional, because chronic sleep trouble is both treatable and heavier than it looks from inside.

Find Support Resources

If the sleepless hours come with thoughts of harming yourself, that is not a sleep problem to wait out. Contact your local crisis line or emergency number now.

The night is long, but it is not a verdict. Rest where you are.

You reached the end. Where are you now?

One tap, however it landed.
