Care Pack #009
Running on Empty
For when the wait has worn you down past tired, into hopelessness or a flat kind of numb. This does not ask you to cheer up.
Waiting this long for help does something specific to a person. It is not just sad, it is depleting, and depletion has two faces: the hopeless one that says nothing will ever change, and the numb one where you have gone flat and cannot feel much of anything at all. Both are real. Both are exhausting to carry. Neither means something is wrong with you.
Here is the reframe this whole page rests on: hopelessness and numbness are what running on empty feels like from the inside. They are a fuel gauge, not a verdict. An empty tank tells you nothing about where the road goes, only that you have been driving a long time without a fill-up.
You do not have to feel hopeful to keep going. You have to keep going, and hope tends to catch up from behind.
Right now, how worn down do I feel:
Moves that don't require hope
The smallest next thing
Not the whole day, not the whole wait. One thing the size of a glass of water, a made bed, a stepped-outside minute. Depletion shrinks what is possible; work at the size it left you, not the size you wish you had.
Momentum is built from things too small to fail at.
Borrowed hope
You do not have to feel hopeful to keep going. If your own hope has run out, let someone else hold it for now: a friend who believes the appointment will help, a line in a book, a version of you from a steadier week. Borrowing is allowed. You pay it back later.
Hope can be a loan when it cannot be a feeling.
The evidence file
Hopelessness swears this will never end and nothing will help. Quietly gather counter-evidence: every hard stretch you have already outlasted, every "I cannot do this" you did anyway. You have survived one hundred percent of your worst days. That is not a slogan; it is your record.
Despair is a feeling wearing the costume of a fact.
If you have gone numb
Numbness gets a bad name. When a system has been overwhelmed for long enough, going flat is how it protects you from feeling all of it at once. It is not failure and it is not permanence, it is a circuit breaker doing its job.
You do not have to force feeling back. You can move gently anyway: warmth on your hands, one real breath, your own name said out loud. Sensation returns on its own schedule once the load eases, and you are allowed to do the small things without feeling anything about them yet.
Doing the next thing while numb still counts. It counts double, actually, because it costs more.
Worn down is not the same as broken
A worn-down state is reversible; it lifts when the load lifts and rest gets in. That is a different animal from being broken, which is not actually what is happening to you even though it can feel exactly like it from inside the depletion. The wait is heavy. You are not weak for buckling under something heavy.
If the hopelessness has started to include thoughts that you would be better off not here, that is not something to ride out alone or wait out until the appointment. Contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline now, by call or text, or your local emergency number. They are for exactly this, and reaching out is not giving up, it is refueling.
While you wait
The two-minute reset was built for the days when even reading a full page is too much, and the rest of the shelf keeps working whether or not you feel like it will.
Now, how worn down do I feel:
Empty is a place you pass through, not a place you live. Keep the engine idling. The fill-up is still coming.
