Care Pack #023

Masking All Day

For the tiredness that comes from performing normal all day. It is real work, and you have been doing two jobs.

Before you begin, where are you right now?

One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.

1, settled10, at its worst

You come home and cannot speak. Not sulking, not sad, just done, in a way that a hard day of actual work does not produce. Somebody asks what you did and the honest answer is nothing much, which makes no sense against how flattened you are.

Here is what you did. You ran a continuous background process all day: watching your own face, timing your responses, tracking whether that landed, adjusting your voice, holding still the things your body wanted to do. None of it appears on a task list. All of it costs.

Being tired from this is not weakness or laziness. Continuous performance is work, and nobody is paying you for that half.

  1. 1.Find a door that closes. A bathroom counts. A car counts
  2. 2.Let your face go slack. Unclench the jaw, stop the eyebrows working, let the smile fall
  3. 3.Stim, rock, flap, hum, whatever you have been holding in. Nobody is watching
  4. 4.Do not use this minute to plan the next performance
  5. 5.Ninety seconds of not-performing is not laziness. It is the only maintenance this gets all day

Where the cost actually lands

The most watched hour

It is rarely the hardest task that empties you. It is the meeting, the lunch, the corridor, the hour with the most eyes. Find that hour and you have found where most of the day went.

The bill is proportional to observation, not difficulty.

The crash afterwards

The flattening that arrives once you are alone is not a mood. It is the system releasing a load it has been carrying at tension. It needs somewhere to land, which means not scheduling anything immediately after the expensive hour.

Plan for the crash and it stops ambushing you.

The shrinking

The obvious solution is fewer people, and it works, briefly. Then the world gets smaller and the mask gets heavier for the rooms you have left, because you are out of practice. Fewer, better rooms is the aim. No rooms is the trap.

The fix is not less company. It is more company where less is required of you.

On dropping it

You do not have to unmask everywhere, and for some people it is genuinely not safe to. The aim is not authenticity as a policy. It is one place, one person, one regular window where nothing is expected of you, so the performance has an end and not just an interval.

If you are masking a difference nobody has ever named, an assessment can be worth having. Not so that you become someone else, but so you stop paying for it privately and calling that normal.

You have been holding a shape all day. You are allowed to put it down before you are alone in the dark.

You reached the end. Where are you now?

One tap, however it landed.
