Care Pack #105

After the Assault

For the days after, when nothing feels like yours yet. It was not your fault. That is not a comfort phrase. It is the finding, and it does not change.

Before you begin, where are you right now?

One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.

1, settled10, at its worst

Whatever the replay is prosecuting you with tonight, the route, the drink, the trust, the freeze, hear the actual finding: the fault belongs entirely to the person who did it. Freezing is not consent; it is a nervous system doing exactly what nervous systems do under threat. Nothing you wore, said, drank, or didn't do transfers one gram of responsibility to you. That is not this page being kind. It is this page being accurate.

However you are responding right now, shock, numbness, strange calm, waves, blankness, is a nervous system responding correctly to something wrong. There is no proper way to be doing this, and you are not failing at it.

The people who walk humans through exactly these days are one free, confidential call away, any hour: the RAINN national hotline, 1-800-656-4673, with zero pressure in any direction.

  1. 1.What happened was not your fault. Not the route, not the drink, not the trust, not the freeze. Whatever the replay is prosecuting you with tonight, the fault belongs entirely to the person who did it, and that is not a comfort phrase. It is the actual finding, every time
  2. 2.You are allowed to do exactly as much as you can do right now, and nothing more. Shock, numbness, calm, hysteria, blankness: every one of those is a nervous system responding correctly to something wrong
  3. 3.If it was recent: a hospital or clinic can check your body and, if you want, preserve evidence, and having the exam does NOT commit you to reporting. That decision stays yours, in every state, at every step
  4. 4.The people who do this every day are one call away, free, confidential, anytime: the RAINN national hotline, 1-800-656-4673. They answer the 3 a.m. version of every question, with zero pressure in any direction
  5. 5.And tonight, if you can, one safe person or one hotline voice, so the night is not carried alone. Alone is the only wrong way to do this part

The one time-sensitive fact

Most of what follows an assault can move at your speed. One thing is time-limited, so it gets said plainly: if it was recent, a hospital or clinic can check your body and, if you choose, preserve evidence.

Having the exam does not commit you to reporting. In every state, that decision stays yours, at every step, and evidence preserved keeps options open that evidence lost closes forever. The hotline can tell you exactly where to go and what to expect.

Beyond that one clock, today makes only reversible decisions: not about reporting, not about telling everyone, not about moving. Today is for the body and the ground, water, food you can manage, rest, and one safe person or one hotline voice so the night is not carried alone.

Put professionals around it, at your speed

Rape crisis centers exist in nearly every region: free, confidential, and staffed by advocates who know every system you might touch, medical, legal, work, school. An advocate commits you to nothing except being accompanied, and accompanied changes everything about the weeks ahead.

Counseling that knows this specific terrain helps most in the earliest weeks, and asking for it is not an admission of damage. It is the same move as a cast on a broken arm.

The body will keep reacting for a while, the sleep, the startle, the waves, and none of it means you are broken. It is the standard aftermath of something abnormal, it eases with time and care, and the people you tell get told at your speed, in your words, with your rules about where it travels.

Where to go next

For the nights, the sleep, and the season around any eventual court dates, this shelf holds more. And if any hour turns against staying alive, that is 988, immediately, and telling them what happened. You survived the thing. The aftermath is survivable too, with company.

You are allowed to do exactly as much as you can do right now, and nothing more. Being carried for a while is not weakness. It is what the people who love you are for, and what the hotlines are for at 3 a.m. when the people are asleep.

You reached the end. Where are you now?

One tap, however it landed.
