Care Pack #106
Leaving, When It Isn't Safe Yet
For living inside a dangerous home while the way out gets built. You are not crazy, you are not exaggerating, and none of this is yours to fix by being better.
Before you begin, where are you right now?
One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.
The confusion is part of the design. The good days are real, and so is the danger, and holding both at once is exactly what this situation does to clear-thinking people. The escalation does not come from your performance, your tone, or your failure to be careful enough. It comes from them, and no version of you, however perfect, would change that.
One reading note before anything else: if this device might be watched, consider a safer one, a friend's phone, a library computer, a work machine. This site's own Technology Safety page covers the basics, and the hotline can talk through the rest.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline is free, confidential, and answers around the clock: 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. They will not pressure you to leave, or judge you for staying. They plan safety with people at every stage, including staying for now.

Why the plan gets built with professionals
The most important fact about leaving, and the reason this page keeps pointing at the hotline: leaving is the most dangerous window of situations like this one. That fact is not a reason to stay. It is the reason the way out gets planned with trained advocates rather than improvised in a bad moment.
The advocates do this all day. They know your local resources, the shelters that take children and sometimes pets, the legal pathways, the financial ones, and the plan they build fits your exact situation, at the speed safety allows. Staying-for-now with a plan is a legitimate stage, not a failure.
Two rules hold at every stage. If tonight is dangerous, 911 is the right call, whatever complicated feelings follow it. And no departures, ultimatums, or plans ever get announced to the dangerous person: quiet is not deceit, it is the safety practice every advocate teaches.
The threads that weaken it
Isolation is the situation's best weapon, so every thread out weakens it. One trusted person told the true version, if one exists and it is safe: a code word, a place to land, a witness who knows.
Where it is safe to keep, the record helps every future option: dates and incidents noted somewhere the dangerous person cannot reach, with a friend, in an account they do not know exists. The advocate can tell you what matters most for your situation and how to keep it without raising alarm.
And if children are in the house, know that getting them out safely is part of every advocate's planning, never an obstacle to it. Their safety and yours are the same project.
Where to go next
The Technology Safety page covers watched devices and safer browsing. And people leave situations like this every single day and rebuild, with help, at the safe speed. The hotline is the first thread: 1-800-799-7233, text START to 88788, any hour.
You are already doing the hardest part: staying clear-eyed inside a situation built to blur you. The way out exists, it gets built quietly, with professionals, at the safe speed, and you do not build it alone.
You reached the end. Where are you now?
One tap, however it landed.
