Care Pack #093

Quitting Without a Program

For getting sober on your own steam, with the safety rails that still apply. Going it alone is a method, not a moral test, and it deserves proper engineering.

Before you begin, where are you right now?

One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.

1, settled10, at its worst

People quit solo for real reasons: privacy, rooms that went badly once, schedules that fit no meeting, or simply a temperament that does its work alone. This page respects the choice and tells the truth about it: the solo route is the harder one, and harder routes are won with better engineering, not more willpower.

But one fact outranks the entire plan, and it comes before day one, not after:

If alcohol or benzodiazepines are what you are quitting, talk to a doctor, urgent care, or a detox line before stopping cold. Withdrawal from those two specifically can be medically dangerous, and the safe-taper conversation takes one visit. Everything else on this page comes after that call.

  1. 1.One thing outranks the whole plan: if alcohol or benzodiazepines are what you are quitting, talk to a doctor, urgent care, or a detox line before stopping cold. Withdrawal from those two specifically can be medically dangerous, and the safe taper conversation takes one visit. Everything else on this page comes after that call
  2. 2.Breathe out longer than you breathe in, three times
  3. 3.Say the accurate sentence: going it alone is a method, not a moral test. And alone can borrow tools from everywhere without owing anyone a membership
  4. 4.Respect what you are attempting: quitting solo is the harder route, chosen for real reasons, privacy, past bad rooms, logistics. Harder route means better engineering, not more willpower
  5. 5.The decision is made once, tonight, in writing: what you are quitting, why, and what day one is. The 2 a.m. renegotiations do not get a vote after that

Solo is not secret

The solo route fails in one predictable place, and it is not the craving. It is the secrecy: nobody knowing means nobody noticing the slide, no one to text at the wobble, and a quit that can be quietly abandoned without a single witness.

So the two non-negotiables that keep solo honest: one person told the truth, I quit, as of today, and I am telling you so it is real. And one doctor's visit even if you feel fine, to hear the safe-quitting facts for your specifics, check what the substance was covering, and put a professional quietly in the loop. One visit is not a program. It is maintenance.

The decision itself gets made once, in writing: what, why, and when day one is. After that, the 2 a.m. renegotiations do not get a vote.

Borrow every tool, join nothing

Using the tools does not sign you up for the ideology. Borrow shamelessly from every method: the HALT check, urge-surfing the craving wave, the day counting if it motivates, the online communities that fit better than rooms did, the craving protocol taped where the wobble happens, the walk, the cold water, the person you text, in order.

Engineer the environment completely, because the solo quitter's best friend is a world with fewer decisions in it: the house emptied, the apps and contacts gone, the routes re-planned, the landmine calendar scripted with exits.

And run the weekly dashboard honestly: sleeping, eating, mood, and whether the white-knuckle feeling is loosening or tightening. Tightening is data, not failure, and it points at the same doors that never closed: medication support from a regular doctor, a counselor, a different kind of meeting, or the SAMHSA line at 1-800-662-4357. Changing methods is not losing. It is steering.

Where to go next

The first-thirty-days mechanics apply in full to the solo route, and the relapse pack is the least judgmental page on this site if a slip happens. And any hour the quit feels bigger than the toolkit, call or text 988, or the SAMHSA line, and say where you are.

Respect what you are attempting. Plenty of people have walked this road solo and made it, and every one of them will tell you the same two things: the engineering mattered more than the willpower, and the one person who knew made all the difference.

You reached the end. Where are you now?

One tap, however it landed.
