Care Pack #037

Everyone Thinks You're Better Now

For when everyone around you has decided you are fine, and you are not there yet.

Before you begin, where are you right now?

One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.

1, settled10, at its worst

The treatment ended, so the story ended. People stopped asking carefully. The offers of help thinned out and then stopped. Somebody said it was so good to have you back, and you agreed, because the alternative was watching their face change.

The end of care is an administrative event. It is not a medical one, and it is certainly not a social one. But everyone around you reads a discharge as a finish line, and the support tends to withdraw considerably faster than the illness does.

You are allowed to still be struggling after the treatment ended. Being visibly better is not the same as being better.

  1. 1.You are allowed to still be struggling after the treatment ended. The end of care is an administrative event, not a medical one
  2. 2.Notice the automatic "I am fine" and let one conversation today go without it
  3. 3.Pick one person and tell them the actual state of things. Not everyone. One
  4. 4.Do not manage other people's relief at your expense. Their comfort is not your responsibility to maintain
  5. 5.Being visibly better is not the same as being better, and you are the only one with access to the difference

What this actually costs

The automatic fine

It arrives before you have checked. Try one honest sentence instead this week: "better than March, worse than last week" tells someone something, and fine tells them to stop asking.

Fine is a door closing. Say a number instead.

Managing their relief

People are relieved you are better and you end up protecting that relief at your own expense. Their comfort is not a thing you are responsible for maintaining.

You are not the caretaker of anybody else and their relief.

Taking it all back at once

Everyone assumes the previous capacity has returned, including you. Renegotiate one commitment you took back too early rather than failing at it and treating that as proof.

Capacity returns slower than the calendar assumes.

If you are hiding a deterioration

That is the exact moment to tell somebody, and it is the hardest one to do it in, because everyone has already celebrated. Concealment at this point is what gives the second crisis its head start.

Pick one person. Say the real state of things once, plainly. You do not have to update everybody, and you do not owe anyone the arc.

The end of the treatment is not the end of the thing. You are allowed to say so out loud.

You reached the end. Where are you now?

One tap, however it landed.
