Care Pack #028
Shame Without a Reason
For the sense of being fundamentally wrong, with no incident to point at. It does not ask you to find the reason.
Before you begin, where are you right now?
One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.
There is no event. That is the part that makes it hard to say out loud, and hard to get help with, because the first question anybody asks is what happened, and nothing did. It is simply there when you wake up, a low certainty that you are not quite alright as a person.
Guilt says I did something bad. Shame says I am something bad. Guilt points at an action and can be answered by repair. Shame points at you and cannot be answered by anything you do, which is why doing more has never once touched it.
Searching for what you did wrong will always find something. That is not evidence. That is the search working as designed.
- 1.Put your feet flat on the floor and press down. Shame collapses posture first and the body can answer back
- 2.Say what is factually true right now: where you are, the time, what is in front of you
- 3.Do not look for the reason. Searching for what you did wrong will always find something, and finding it feeds this
- 4.Lift your head and look at something across the room. Shame is a downward, inward posture, and changing it changes the volume slightly
- 5.Guilt says I did something bad. Shame says I am something bad. The second one is lying about its evidence
Why it keeps itself alive
Withdrawal
The first instruction shame gives is always to go away, be less visible, take up less room. Withdrawing is what keeps it true, because it removes exactly the contact that would contradict it.
It is the only state that prescribes the thing that sustains it.
Testing
Quietly setting people small tests to see whether they will confirm the verdict. The tests are usually designed so that any outcome reads as proof, and they cost real relationships over time.
A test built to be failed is not a test. It is a rehearsal.
Absolutes
I always, I never, everyone, nobody, forever. Notice the tense. Absolute words are the sound of shame speaking rather than accuracy, and they can be spotted in your own sentences before you believe them.
When the words go absolute, the speaker is shame, not you.
This one weakens when it is spoken
Shame is unusual among these states: it reliably loses strength when it is said out loud to one person who does not recoil. Not broadcast, not confessed to everyone. One person, once, in ordinary words.
Shame with no origin very often has one that is simply out of view, in a period you do not remember well or never thought to count. That is genuinely difficult to reach alone, and it is one of the strongest reasons to work with a therapist rather than working harder on yourself.
You are not required to earn the right to take up room. You already have it, on the days you cannot feel it.
You reached the end. Where are you now?
One tap, however it landed.
