Care Pack #027

Never Good Enough

For when the standard moves every time you reach it, so arriving never actually happens.

Before you begin, where are you right now?

One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.

1, settled10, at its worst

You hit the target and the target moves. Not later, immediately, and the achievement converts into the new baseline before you have had a chance to stand on it. So the effort never buys the thing it was supposed to buy, which was resting for a moment.

From outside this looks like high standards. From inside it is a machine that cannot register a win, because registering a win would mean stopping, and stopping is the thing it is built to prevent.

Being uncomfortable with something unfinished is not evidence that it is unfinished.

  1. 1.Set a timer. When it goes, the thing is done, in the state it is in
  2. 2.Name the actual standard out loud. Said in plain words it usually sounds unreasonable, which is the useful part
  3. 3.Send, submit, or put it down. The last ten percent is almost never the part anyone else sees
  4. 4.Do not start again from the top. Rework is the ritual, not the improvement
  5. 5.Being uncomfortable with something unfinished is not evidence it is not finished

What it actually costs

The hours

Count the time spent polishing against the time spent deciding. The last ten percent routinely eats half the total and is the part that almost nobody else can see. That ratio is the whole diagnosis.

Rework is the ritual. It is rarely the improvement.

The delay

Not doing it until you can do it properly is how perfectionism turns quietly into not doing it. The unstarted thing is protected from judgment forever, which is exactly the appeal.

Delay is avoidance wearing very respectable clothes.

The shrinking

Eventually you stop going near anything you might not excel at. The standard is intact, the life is smaller, and from inside it feels like discernment rather than fear.

This is the version that takes decades and never announces itself.

Where the standard came from

Nobody arrives at this on their own. It was usually learned somewhere it was genuinely necessary: a house where mistakes cost something, a place where being adequate was not safe. It was a reasonable adaptation to a real situation, and it has outlived it.

If you can hear whose voice the standard is in, that is good material for a therapist and poor material for more effort. You cannot out-perform a rule that was never about performance.

Finished at good enough is still finished. Perfect and unsent helps nobody, including you.

You reached the end. Where are you now?

One tap, however it landed.
