Care Pack #026

The Anger You Live With

For the low, constant resentment that stopped being about one thing and became the way you look at everything.

Before you begin, where are you right now?

One tap. It gives you something to measure against at the end.

1, settled10, at its worst

This is not the flare. The flare comes and goes and you can point at what caused it. This is the other one: the steady background charge you carry into rooms, the readiness to be let down again, the way small things land with a weight they have not earned.

Resentment is almost never really about today. Today only supplied the occasion. Underneath it there is usually one of two sentences: I did everything right and it did not count, or nobody has ever noticed what this costs me.

Carrying it silently is the most expensive of the available options, and the one most people choose.

  1. 1.Name what just happened in one flat sentence, without the case for the prosecution attached
  2. 2.Move the charge through your body: push against a wall for ten seconds, walk fast to the end of the street and back
  3. 3.Do not draft the message. Drafting it rehearses it and rehearsing it deepens it
  4. 4.Breathe out for longer than you breathe in, six or seven times
  5. 5.Resentment is usually old, and today only supplied the occasion

What it is actually made of

A request that was never made

A large amount of resentment is a want that was never said out loud, being punished for not being guessed. It feels like they should have known. Sometimes they should have. They still did not.

The unspoken request is the one that never gets met.

A cost nobody counted

Work that was invisible, a sacrifice nobody registered, years of holding something together while it looked effortless from outside. The anger is a receipt for a bill nobody knew was running.

Being unseen is its own injury, separate from the work.

An old debt with a new name

The person in front of you inherits it. Some of this belongs to them and some of it arrived years before they did, and telling those apart is most of the work.

Sort what is theirs from what is old, or they pay for both.

If the anger frightens you

If it has landed on someone, or you can feel that it might, that is not a character verdict and it is not something to sit with quietly until it passes. It is a reason to get a professional involved now rather than later, and wanting to stop is a sufficient reason to ask.

And if you are on the receiving end of somebody who directs theirs at you, that is a different page entirely: leave, and take that seriously, before working on your own feelings about it.

Resentment is a request that was never made, still waiting to be answered by someone who never heard it.

You reached the end. Where are you now?

One tap, however it landed.

1, settled10, at its worst
